On 8 September, members of the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust Board held a cordial and constructive meeting with Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock and senior officials from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The Trust was pleased to be joined by Sheffield MPs Clive Betts and Abtisam Mohamed, as well as Tom Hunt, Leader of Sheffield City Council.

Discussions focused on the establishment of the Independent Football Regulator and the progress being made to put the necessary legal framework in place. The minister indicated that the Government is working through the legislative process to get the Regulator operating as soon as possible. Of particular importance to the Trust was confirmation that, in circumstances  where there are concerns about an existing owner’s suitability, the regulator will have discretion to assess and prioritise cases for potential intervention. The Trust also received further clarity on the Owners, Directors and Senior Executives (ODSE) Regime, which will play a crucial role in strengthening accountability and safeguarding the long-term sustainability of clubs such as Sheffield Wednesday.

The Trust thanks the Minister, MPs and Council Leader for their time and engagement, and looks forward to continuing to work constructively with them as these important reforms are rolled out.
